I was reading from Spurgeon today and really enjoyed what he had to say. I don't want to forget some of the things, so I'm going to save 'em in my blog.
"Therefore, brethren, we are debtors." --Romans 8:12
As God's creatures, we are all debtors to Him: to obey Him with all our body, and soul, and strength. Having broken His commandments, as we all have, we are debtors to His justice, and we owe to Him a vast amount which we are not able to pay. But of the Christian it can be said that he does not owe God's justice anything, for Christ has paid the debt His people owed; for this reason the believer owes the more to love. I am a debtor to God's grace and forgiving mercy; but I am no debtor to His justice, for He will never accuse me of a debt already paid. Christ said, "It is finished!" and by that He meant, that whatever His people owed was wiped away for ever from the book of remembrance. Christ, to the uttermost, has satisfied divine justice; the account is settled; the handwriting is nailed to the cross; the receipt is given, and we are debtors to God's justice no longer. But then, because we are not debtors to our Lord in that sense, we become ten times more debtors to God than we should have been otherwise. Christian, pause and ponder for a moment. What a debtor thou art to divine sovereignty! How much thou owest to His disinterested love, for He gave His own Son that He might die for thee. Consider how much you owe to His forgiving grace, that after ten thousand affronts He loves you as infinitely as ever. Consider what you owe to His power; how He has raised you from your death in sin; how He has preserved your spiritual life; how He has kept you from falling; and how, though a thousand enemies have beset your path, you have been able to hold on your way. Consider what you owe to His immutability. Though you have changed a thousand times, He has not changed once. Thou art as deep in debt as thou canst be to every attribute of God. To God thou owest thyself, and all thou hast--yield thyself as a living sacrifice, it is but thy reasonable service.
I think he makes some really good points -- we are debtors! God has been so good to us as to send His only Son as our Saviour, and then how do we show our appreciation? We lie, cheat, steal, etc. We put off things that would bring us closer to God, like having our private worship, communing with God, searching the scriptures regularily. We break all of God's commandments everyday! Is that how you would show your appreciation for, say, a friend that helped you out in some way? Not at all!! Then, why would you show your appreciation for God - the creator and sustainer of the earth, that sent His ONLY Son to die for us - in this way? I think that we all need to take our relationship with God more seriously! God is always there with us - watching over us - do we think about that enough? When you're doing something you know you shouldn't be doing ... do you think "No one's here -- they'll never know!" Well, God knows! He even knows the things you're hiding in your heart. Think on that next time you're ready to do something that you know is wrong -- God is right there and knows what you're up to.
After all is said and done, when we're ready to leave these earthy vessels, what happens then? You either go to be with God, our loving God, or to be with Satan for eternity. Think about that word for a second ... ETERNITY. You have no second chances after that! The way that you chose to live your life will be evident by what God has to say to you on judgement day ... "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." Or, Well done, good and faithful servant. Now -- this earth is like a test ... one which we can pass with flying colors or that we fail in miserably. There's no middle ground - "So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. " God doesn't want your apathy, He wants you to be on fire for Him ... to share with everyone the joy that is in you! So, what is it that you want God to say to you on judgement day? I'm not saying that you must be perfect in order to be received into everlasting life (because that is impossible by nature), but that you do need to put some effort into it and life to the best of your ability! Everyone has different pits that they fall into, but God is there (along with church family) to help you out in the hard times! He will not give you the cold shoulder if you come to Him in sincerity wanting His help! Don't ever forget God's grace and mercy that is yours through Christ!
